John Wick director Chad Stahelski has revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the team are working on a John Wick anime prequel that will show his life before the first film, a smart way to add to the lore without having to digitally de-age Keanu Reeves. With a new TV series, spin off film and John Wick 5 officially confirmed, it seems like the franchise is firing on every cylinder and hopefully it all comes together. Rarely has a movie franchise revolving around a single character been so successful, but John Wick 4 was very well received by fans and critics alike, the premise clearly catching the zeitgeist and evolving with every new iteration.
"Right now, we’re knee-deep in development on a feature anime about John Wick. It’s a prequel to the movies, which is awesome. It’s fun that it’s in a different medium. We can be a little bit more crazy and nutty in the anime."
If anything lends itself to the frenetic visuals of anime, it's the balletic bullet-style of John Wick, a veritable juggernaut of unstoppable death. Will it be any good? Last word to the director:
"To be completely fucking arrogant for a second, we didn’t just work the last 10 years to see it all go to shit."
