Terracotta Far East Film Festival is back for 2014 and once again promises to bring some of the best of recent Asian cinema to the UK. We take a brief look at some of the excellent films on show, beginning with the selections from Japan!
An example of the 'workshop' indie filmmaking movement that's been gaining traction in Japan, Be My Baby was filmed in just four days for under $10,000. From the Director of Love Strikes! Hitoshi One, the film looks at the lives of a group of bright young things in the aftermath of a party. A world away from One's first film, this is a look at just how messy youth can be.
This absurd comedy stars Satoshi Tsumabuki (Villain, For Love's Sake) as a slightly useless ad-man who accidentally gets sent to represent his company at a festival in Santa Monica. The only problems being, he's a nervous sort of person and doesn't speak English! Accordingly he brings his colleague Hikari for support, but of course things don't quite go to plan. Director Akira Nagai will also be attending the festival for a Q&A after the film.
This much-awaited new film from the director of Fish Story, The Native Duck, The Foreign Duck and God in a Coin Locker is one of the highlights of the festival. Based on a book by Kanae Minato (also the authoress behind Confessions), The Snow White Murder Case features a host of stars including Mao Inoue (Hana Yori Dango, Rebirth), Ayano Go, Misako Renbutsu and Nanao, and examines the effect of rumour in the digital age when Ayano Go's character receives a Twitter tip-off implicating Mao Inoue in a murder! This one is a must-see.
