Youtuber Convicted for Sharing Game and Anime Content

Written by Ross Locksley on 08 Sep 2023

A Sendai District Court Judge, Koichi Nakamura, has sentenced a Youtuber to two years in prison with a five year suspended sentence and a fine of 7 million yen. The web creator, Shinobu Yoshida, was charged with copyright infringement after sharing three items on YouTube without permission, including spoilers for Steins Gate: Hiyori Koiri no Darin and video edited from Spy x Family.

Prosecutors argued that this infringement was a "malicious act that tramples on the effort of content production" as it would reduce the desire for people to purchase the products now that the endings had been shown publicly.

This might be a cue for YouTubers to be careful on what they publish online, specifically spoilers for any property owned by litigious Japanese companies.
