The official Macross website has announced that, of all studios, Sunrise will be working on a new Macross series. It's a surprising move given that Macross and Gundam fandoms are often fighting over which mecha series is the greatest of all time, so to see the reigns being handed over like this is quite the eyebrow-raiser. Indeed I nearly lost my monacle!
Both franchises have enjoyed success well beyond their original runs, with Gundam breaking records for Bandai this year and Macross still spanwing theatrical releases as late as 2018 with Passionate Walkure.
Sunrise has proven itself adept at crafting notable entries into the mecha genre, with Escaflowne, Code Geass and even VOTOMS in its catalogue, the studio is an excellent choice on paper. It's also worth noting that Sunrise is owned by Bandai, whose Chogokin figures in both Gundam and Macross camps are much sought-after hi-end collectables coveted by collectors worldwide, opening up even more potential for merchandising rights.
While no details have been dropped as yet, we can only hope that Macross, somewhat infamous for leaving plot threads unresolved, might just start bringing some disparate elements together while we're all still young enough to remember what they are!
