Netflix announce My Melody & Kuromi stop-motion series

Written by Ross Locksley on 09 Jan 2025

Netflix have posted a trailer for a new stop-motion animation series for Sanrio's My Melody & Kuromi characters, set to premiere in July.

The new series marks the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi (who my 5 year-old is nuts about already!). The series is directed by Tomoki Misato (My Little Goat) written by Shuko Nemoto (Motto Chouetsu Shita Tokoro e) and produced by WIT Studio (Attack on Titan).

Sanrio is a company that specialises in creating cute characters and merchandising them, something they've been successful at since the company was founded in 1960 when it used characters from Peanuts. Things really took off in 1974 with the creation of Hello Kitty, allowing the company to progress without paying outside royalties. My Melody & Kuromi are as loved today as they were on their debut (more so even) so this new series looks to be a cute treat for fans of the merchandising behemoth.

Looks to be very charming indeed (from the very limited amount we get to see!)
