Good news for Japanese culture, as both Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron and Toho's Godzilla Minus One are shortlisted for Oscars as reported by Deadline.
Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One has been nominated for visual effects, which is a first for a Japanese film and well deserved given that the director cut his teeth in visual effects. Considering the miniscule budget for the film, we're rooting for him in 2024.
The Boy and the Heron is up for Best Original Score, Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro) once again lending his talents to the studio.
It's great to see Japanese films gaining overseas recognition, even if that's possibly down to a particularly poor year for Hollywood studios who have little to celebrate from 2023.
