Cult classic Serial Experiments Lain gets an official fan game

Written by John Carlo Rayas on 20 Mar 2025

A fan game based on the 1998 cult classic Serial Experiments Lain is currently in the works. The game, titled “//signal,” is a 3D RPG that lets players reprise the role of Lain Iwakura as she navigates through Wired.

Team MJM has been developing the game for five years while streaming their development progress on YouTube as far back as 2021. On March 1st, 2025, the team received a letter of recommendation from the series’ screenplay writer Chiaki J. Konaka. He said, “Serial Experiments Lain is still going on today” when he saw the project’s progress after a period of silence.

The game is under the “lain TTL” license, allowing anybody within Japan to create derivative works based on the show without paying a fee. The license's creation dates back to 2018 during the show's 20th anniversary when series producer Yasuyuki Ueda addressed fan concerns regarding the selling price of the PlayStation game. This gives the game the status of being an "official fan game."

"//signal" will be released on April 30th via Steam and itch.io for JPY 1,000 (GBP 5.20).  Physical copies can also be pre-ordered via Amazon for JPY 1,700 (GBP 8.83).
