AnimeLeague London Anime Con interview
Written by Ross Locksley on 29 Jan 2013
With the London Anime Convention now just a few weeks away, we talk to Mike Towers to find our why you should be heading to London.
With the London Anime Con just around the corner, what's on offer this time that's a particular highlight for you?
The guests are certainly a huge highlight this year. It's great to have Voice-Actress Caitlin Glass returning to the UK (we had her attend at Alcon 2011 and she was lovely). As you may be aware, she is the voice of Winry Rockbell in Fullmetal Alchemist Cammy in Street Fighter IV and too many other anime/games to list. She will be doing free signings on the Sunday, so that will be well worth checking out. We also have a packed timetable of talks, workshops, tournaments, screening and live-music, along with some top-notch events including the Cosplay Masquerade, The Talent Show and the Otaku Fashion Show. The Cosplay Masquerade shall be particularly exciting as not only will the winner grab a £50 first-prize, but they will also have the option to be interviewed and featured on our front-page as an
Animeleague Cosplay-Ambassador!
What's been the most difficult aspect of putting the show together this year?
Continually trying to improve and innovate our events! We're never content with staying still, so looking for those fresh twists is always a huge challenge. Thankfully we have an amazing community who are always willing to lend us their ideas! Thank you guys!
And which has been the most fun?
Continually trying to improve and innovate our events! (.. Yep!) We all enjoy a challenge and finding something fresh and new is always a very rewarding experience! How we plan to puish the Talent Show this time around is going to be particularly fun – from now on, the winner of the Talent Show will be offered the chance to feature as a performer in future events. We want to help spot and grow rising talent. We want to see a lot of brand new stars in the making!
What one event at the show is your favourite and why (you can choose 2 if you need to!)
For us it has to be The Otaku Fashion Show. An alternate fashion show that provides a huge amount of glamour to the event as we bring in professional models, modelling agencies (such as Spirit Models who are pretty much the #1 alternate-modelling agency in this country), alternate fashion magazines such as Alt-Fashion and Devolution Magazine and much more besides. We're putting a lot of work in this event and we really want it to pay off on the day! Make sure you don't miss it on the Sunday at 4pm!
What do you get out of killing yourself every year to put the show together?
We enjoy putting together a great show and seeing the attendees and crew having fun brings a smile to our faces. The feedback afterward saying the really enjoyed the con and look forward to the next one is a great feeling and always inspires us to do more. Watching every event be better than the previous one, as we progress and grow is also fantastic to watch and very satisfying!
What one event should visitors attend without fail?
Make sure you don't miss the Voice Actors Q&A on the Sunday at 3pm! We have all of our big guests there including Caitlin Glass, MasakoX (from the hit series DBZ Abridged) and many more!
Finally, any advice to your visitors?
Here's our top five -
#1. We find people forget to eat and hydrate themselves at cons. It can get very busy and hot inside and attendees are busy trying to the next bargain or rushing to see an event.
#2. Don't get carried away in the dealers room and make sure to manage your cash and keep back enough for your lunch, drink and travel!
#3. Always make a travel plan and stay in groups if you intend to stay late. London Underground starts to close after midnight which means getting a night-bus, taxi or walking back to your accommodation. It would be better to be with a group of friendly people so you don't get lost or become vulnerable in London.
#4. Make sure you check out the timetable (you can view it HERE) and plan your day beforehand!
#5. Oh, and of course – make sure you have a great time!
Our thanks to Mike for taking the time to do this interview. Have fun kids, and let us know how you get on at the LAC in our forum :)
