Going in, I thought Getting Lucky Getting Lucky was going to be a typical harem series where a guy becomes popular for no particular reason with a lot of girls but the truth is that the premise was much more bizarre than I expected!
Our main character is Kamiji, a high school student who is burdened with an unusual rumour, that having sex with him will bring about good luck and fortune. He's even been dubbed the "Fortune Fucker" because of this! While the idea seems ludicrous, there is certainly a basis for it as some of the girls who have slept with him have been unusually fortunate. Thus, we witness several encounters where a girl approaches him, explains why they need good luck and proceed to have sex with him.
It's not a particularly complex plot but it's certainly an amusing one due to the absurd premise and it even managed to get a few chuckles out of me as I read it, particularly the ending which leans into how wacky it is. In fact, this is an aspect that I would've liked to see more of throughout Getting Lucky Getting Lucky. While I wouldn't say that the story is played straight, it does seem toned back from what it could've been and I wouldn't have minded seeing the story devolve into complete insanity. Nonetheless, the plot manages to remain memorable due to the premise alone and the funny moments throughout. In terms of content, I think it's worth noting that one of these encounters involves incest which, depending on your tastes, either adds or detracts from the experience. Personally, I'm not fond of incest so this took away some of my enjoyment but it's worth mentioning since some people will want to avoid the title because of that while others, I'm sure, will seek it out due to that.
As for characters, Kamiji is obviously who we spend the most time with so it's worth taking a look at him. What I quite like about him is that, in contrast to what you might expect, he finds the situation to be annoying. The constant requests mean that he's falling behind in his school studies. While he lays some blame on the girls, he recognises that he's ultimately the one at fault since he's horny and isn't going to turn any of them down. Thus, he ends up being rather submissive, going along with whatever comes his way with little in the way of protest. While I don't think it's necessary to examine any one of the female characters given their relatively brief appearances, I do think it's worth noting their collective attitude towards him. They essentially end up treating him as an object with a few situations where they essentially force themselves on him. He's ultimately fine with it, except that he can't find time to study, but I think it's worth noting for potential readers.
As for the artwork, it's great with a good variety of character designs for the females, paneling that often adds to the movement of the sex scenes while incorporating techniques such as full body shots, internals and turning the male character transparent so that you can see the body parts being pressed against and excellent use of shading and effects. My main criticism actually relates to Kamiji himself who is depicted without eyes. I suspect that this may be to let readers use him as a stand in for themselves which is understandable in a lot of cases but, given the premise, I think it would've added to the humour if he made some wild expressions throughout, something which is restricted due to his eyeless state.
Most people probably wouldn't regard it as an extra but I thought it worth pointing out nevertheless. The cover used on the Irodori Comics store page is in the same format as what your standard tankoban release would be but, when you actually start reading Getting Lucky Getting Lucky, you see that the cover was actually cropped and the real cover is about twice the width. I was quite surprised to see this but I did think it was neat that they included it.
Getting Lucky Getting Lucky has a funny premise and, even if I think it wasn't used to its full potential, it ended up being quite an enjoyable read. If you're looking for something that's light, easy to read and makes you laugh from time to time, Getting Lucky Getting Lucky is a good choice to go with.
