ROD the TV Vol. 6

11 Jun 2006
In the penultimate volume, we see a major escalation of events and the final plan for world domination is revealed by the head of the British Library, Mr Joker.

Its nail biting stuff, with many of the characters captured, on the run or presumed dead. We’re only granted 3 episodes on this disc, which brings us into ADV territory in terms of value for money, but the series has managed to build up enough momentum that you can forgive it. Just.

So far, ROD the TV has been a mixed bag. With action-packed but shallow early episodes, the rogue publishing agency Dokusensha finally bought forth the original cast, and things improved rapidly from there. Subsequently I cared less about the Paper Sisters, and far more about Yomiko and the former Miss Deep as they come to terms with having to fight former comrades. It’s these scenes that really sizzle, and have kept my interest thus far.

Incidentally, in March of this year Viz Media released the ROD manga. Anyone who wants to know more about the characters and settings would do well to check this out. Expect a review soon.

Animation and voice acting are on a par with the rest of the series, and extras include the usual gallery and trailers, making volume 6 an entertaining but markedly thin addition to a series that has finally found it’s feet.

Exciting stuff indeed, but a thin package overall.
