MCM Comic Con have today taken to Twitter to announce some sad news about their forthcoming events. The MCM Comic Con events in Telford, Liverpool and Northern Ireland are being discontinued in order to focus on "significantly growing and expanding the shows in Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham and London". MCM Comic Con have also confirmed that tickets already purchased for the discontinued events will be refunded within the next 10 working days.
There has been no shortage of speculation about MCM's future after their recent takeover by ReedPOP, the American company behind events like PAX and New York Comic Con (you can find information on all of their events at http://www.reedpop.com/Events/). Industry insiders suggest the deal could have been worth upwards of £17.5 million, making it the "highest multiple on earnings paid for any fan convention in any market" according to Forbes. Given attendee numbers for other events run by ReedPop run into the hundreds of thousands you can imagine what the future might hold for the MCM Comic Con events, given this latest announcement.
Were you planning to attend any of these events? Are you disappointed or do you think it's better for MCM's future? Let us know in the forums.
