Criterion to release Lone Wolf and Cub film collection this March

Written by A. H. on 17 Jan 2017

Kazuo Koike's Lone Wolf and Cub manga is a seminal work that you'll hear referenced frequently, and the six live-action films based upon that series are held in equally high regard.

Whether you've seen these masterpieces of Asian cinema before or not, this year will provide a definitive way to watch them all in High Definition, as the Criterion Collection will see a Lone Wolf and Cub Collection added to its ranks.

This special edition box set will provide all six films restored via a 2K remaster and with uncompressed mono audio, an HD presentation of the English dubbed re-edit of the first two films, a whole host of interviews and documentaries (including one with Kazuo Koike himself), and a booklet featuring an essay from Patrick Macias.

Here's the blurb for this release:

The Cult Classic, Six-Film Series Based on the Internationally Best-Selling Japanese Manga Comics. Includes: Sword Of Vengeance, Baby Cart At The River STYX, Baby Cart To Hades, Baby Cart In Peril, Baby Cart In The Land Of Demons, White Heaven In Hell. Based on the best-selling manga series, the six intensely kinetic Lone Wolf and Cub films elevated chanbara to bloody, new heights. The shogun's executioner, Itto Ogami (Tomisaburo Wakayama), takes to wandering the countryside as an assassin-along with his infant son Daigoro (Akihiro Tomikawa) and an infinitely weaponised perambulator-helping those he encounters while seeking vengeance for his murdered wife. Delivering stylish thrills and a body count that defies belief, Lone Wolf and Cub is beloved for its brilliantly choreographed and unbelievably violent action sequences as well as for its tender depiction of the bonds between parent and child.

The set is priced at £59.99, and will be released on 27th March 2017 here in the UK. You can find the set up for pre-order on Amazon UK.
