Dan first encountered anime at the ripe old age of six with a VHS copy of Laputa. Ten years later he re-discovered it in Robotech and overnight a DVD collection was born.

Muhyo to Roujii no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho

Japanese Air Date: 03/08/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: Muhyo and Roji are experts in magical law and are here to deal with all your spirit problems!

Should I watch this: The concept is undeniably great (Ghostbusters except they’re lawyers?!) but it also has to be said that this doesn’t look great. Poor character designs, cheap animation and a strong sense that this is aimed at young children all lean me to thinking that this won’t be worth your time this season.

One Room Second Season

Japanese Air Date: 03/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: The second season of this first-person short series about your relationship with three girls in your apartment.

Should I watch this: Well the concept is still fairly interesting but the previous season didn’t really make much of an impact. If you liked it last time around you’ll be up for seeing it again though.

Oshiete Mahou no Pendulum: Rilu Rilu Fairilu

Japanese Air Date: 07/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: The third season of the series following a young girls adventures in Fairyland.

Should I watch this: I may be going out on a limb here but the visuals here suggest a certain….particular audience which most of our readership don’t fall into. I’d say watch it with your young daughter if you have one but they’d probably be bored reading the subtitles.

Overlord III

Japanese Air Date: July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: Lord Ainz and his loyal minions continue to move towards world domination. Assuming the light novels continue to be followed in order, a group of adventurers is about to discover that planning a raid into Nazarick is a very bad idea….

Should I watch this: If you like the first two seasons then you’ll definatley be on board here and with the focus shifting back towards Ainz himself the rather awkward pacing of the second season should be a thing of the past. New viewers should definatley start at the beginning though (after all its only 24 episodes to catch up on).

Phantom in the Twilight

Japanese Air Date: 09/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: A young girl studying in London discovers cafe Forbidden, where a group of handsome young men guard the boundary between the human world and that of the shadows.

Should I watch this: This feels like your standard otome adaptation-type show to me (there's no actual game yet but a mobile game company is behind the production so it can’t be far away…). There could be something here but it’s probably wisest to let others check this out and see what the buzz is. Then again, if nothing else you get to watch a show where one of the characters is called Vlad Garfunkel…

Planet With

Japanese Air Date: 08/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: Er… we couldn’t find one for this new sci-fi multimedia franchise at time of writing. Something something mecha happens?

Should I watch this: It’s pretty hard to judge how a mecha show is going to turn out these days but the signs are not especially promising here. The lack of an easily available synopsis and the very simplistic design work shown off here don’t exactly inspire hope that we’ll be getting a deep rich sci-fi show as much as the fact that these things are going to be really, really easy to make toys out of.

Satsuriku no Tenshi

Japanese Air Date: 06/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: Rachael and Zack awaken to find themselves in the basement of a mysterious building and must work together to desperately find their way out.

Should I watch this: Now we’re talking! This visual novel adaptation is ticking a lot of boxes – it looks moody, the core mystery is classic yet full of potential and the array of characters and imagery presented are suitably weird. This should definatley be on your radar.

Senjuushi (Thousand Musketeers)

Japanese Air Date: 03/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: After the world has been devastated by nuclear war a small group of resistance fighters use antique firearms to fight against the rule of the World Empire.

Should I watch this: I’m torn here because on one hand this looks like it should be a pretty standard otome show but the premise has a lot of potential here and I really want to see how these guys don’t just get blasted to bits whilst they’re trying to reload those muskets. I’m going to cautiously suggest it might be worth a look for at least the first episode or two.

Shichisei no Subaru

Japanese Air Date: 06/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: 6 years after the MMORPG Union was shut down after the death of a player former star player Haruto is lured into the games sequel, Re’Union only to discover that the deceased player, his friend, might not be as gone as he’d thought.

Should I watch this: You didn’t really think the ‘trapped in a fantasy world/videogame’ trope was going to be done any time soon did you? As always this show is going to live or die based on what new factors it can bring to proceedings. This time it seems to be the idea that only one of the players is stuck there. There's certainly potential in that concept but only if the show is willing to explore the outside world as much as the in-game one and I’m not so sure if it’s going to go there. Keep an eye on this but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high.

Shinya! Tensai Bakabon

Japanese Air Date: 11/07/18

Official Site:

Synopsis: The fifth anime adaptation of this popular gag manga following a dim-witted boy and his lazy, former-genius father.

Should I watch this: The fact that they’ve been adapting this repeatedly since the 70’s is certainly a good sign though I’ve never seen any of the previous versions. As with any comedy series the quality of the gags is going to be key here although I am concerned that the shows concept and distinctly average flash-stlye animation are not really suited for a full length show and this might end up having been better off as a series of shorts.
