Grand Blue

Japanese Air Date: 14th July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: Iori Kitahara begins his new college life in the ocean town of Izu City. He moves into his uncle's diving shop “Grand Blue” there he meets a group of guys and girls who love diving and drinking. Just what will life have in store for Iori now?

Should I watch this: From the premise and trailer the show bills itself as an ecchi comedy taking place at a diving shop with jokes revolving around diving and drinking beer. The show seems like a mix-up between Amanchu and ecchi comedies like Love Hina and such. Something feels a bit more old school about this one compared to other slice of life shows. One to watch for those who want ecchi comedy.

Japanese Air Date: 2nd July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: Kentarou Tachibana is high school badminton coach who is far more enthusiastic about the sport than the other members of his team. One day he meets a quiet student named Ayano Hanesaki, while she is physically capable of playing Badminton and has experience doing so, she has no intention of playing it further. After a set of circumstances, Ayano finds herself joining the team. With her on the team Kentarou is determined to make them champions.

Should I watch this: The show itself looks like a serious sports drama revolving around badminton. The animation in the trailer looks great and has incredible art. Badminton is a fast paced sport so there will be plenty of opportunity to showcase some dynamic matches. Lets hope that what happens off the court is enough to keep viewers hooked.

Happy Sugar Life

Japanese Air Date: 14th July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: High School girl Satou Matsuzaka has a reputation for sleeping around with various men. One day this lifestyle comes to an end when she meets a little girl named Shio, who she takes in. Wanting this life to continue there is nothing she won't do for Shio, even committing murder. How long can their “Happy Sugar Life” last?

Should I watch this: At first glance this may seem like a slice of life comedy with its cute art style and characters but upon watching the trailer and reading deeper into the show's premise; this show promises to be a dark psychological thriller with some very dark themes and gore. The premise and trailer look interesting and the main character reminds me of Yuno from Mirai Nikki in that she appears cute and nice but can snap at any moment and even kill. This seems like a rather interesting show to keep an eye on.

Harukana Receive

Japanese Air Date: 6th July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: Taking place in Okinawa, Haruka forms a beach volleyball pair with her friend Kanata. Kanata has reservations about playing due to her short height, which caused her to give up playing beach volleyball in the past. However due to Haruka's reassurance she gives the sport another try with their aim to win the junior tournament.

Should I watch this: It's a sports show but focusing on girls playing beach volleyball. So expect to see a lot of swimsuits, bikinis and general beachwear in the mix. From this and the trailer the show promises a more light hearted and fun affair.

Hataraku Onii-san! No 2!

Japanese Air Date: 6th July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: 2nd Season of Hataraku Onii-San!

Should I watch this: The show features anthropomorphic cats getting odds jobs which leads the way to some comedic situations. One to watch if you like cute cats working and have seen the first season.

High Score Girl

Japanese Air Date: 14th July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: Set in 1991, the story focuses on a young boy called Haruo Yagauchi who has no friends or skills other than being good at video games. One day he loses at Street Fighter 2 to his fellow classmate, Akira Oono, she smart, popular and everything Haruo is not. The losing streak continues as she follows him to different arcades. Thus begins their bond of friendship over video games

Should I watch this: The show itself looks like a fun romantic comedy featuring games. From the trailer there is a lot of retro games on display such as street fighter 2, slaughterhouse and Final Fight. As a fan of video games myself it's good to see a show that has people who play video games as characters and having real world games be on display is also fun.

Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria

Japanese Air Date: 8th July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: Yuuto Suoh gets more than he bargained for when he joins his childhood friend in trying out an urban myth. When he takes a picture of himself in front of a mirror at this local shrine he is whisked away to another world armed only with his solar powered smart phone. The world he finds himself is one influenced by Norse mythology. Using his knowledge and phone, Yuuto hopes to earn the adoration of the group of warrior maidens known as the Einherjar.

Should I watch this: It isn't a new anime season without another isekai show. This one seems rather cookie cutter borrowing elements from a lot of shows that have came before it. Mostly notably trapped in another world with my smartphone. This show will probably be the same. It'll either be terrible or dumb trashy fun. But here's hoping it does something interesting with the premise as there are times when trapped in another world shows can be really good. See Re:Zero and Grimgar as recently released examples.

Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu

Japanese Air Date: 5th July 2018

Official Site:

Synopsis: In the MMORPG Cross Reverie, Takuma Sakamoto has earned the title “Demon Lord” for being so powerful. One day he is summoned to another world with the appearance of his in game avatar by two girls who tell them they are performing an enslaving ritual. This is where Takuma's passive skill activates reversing the ritual so that the girls are enslaved by him instead. Takuma has no idea to talk with people so decides to act like his persona from the game

Should I watch this: Another isekai show, This time feels like Overlord with a character taking on the appearance of their character from a video game. From the trailer and premise this one promises to be a comedy that hopefully doesn't take itself too seriously. The manga it is based on is absolutely hilarious, and it seems to be one of those shows which goes against the grain somewhat. Definitely worth a look. (Plus it has a catgirl! Ed)
