As I am a glutton for punishment, this winter season I am yet again reviewing a comedy series. But this one is only three minutes per episode so surely there isn't much for me to get upset about! Plus, it features a cat as its main focus, which helps as I am a colossal cat lover.

Poyopoyo chronicles the adventures of a fat ginger cat called (surprise!) Poyo. The spherical-shaped cat is found by drunk lass Moe Sato while out for a night on the tiles, and who decides to adopt the adorable creature into her family. Silly hi-jinks and cat humour ensues as the family acclimatises to their newly adopted pet.

To put it simply (and to make sure that this review is short so you can run along and start watching it pronto), Poyopoyo is great. The show feels like the result of a lot of very excited people all getting together and having great fun crafting something - the excitement radiating from the show is infectious. The script is genuinely funny and bursting with jokes, the voices are all perfectly timed and enthusiastic, the art is pleasant to look at and clothed in a cheerful watercolours-and-crayons aesthetic that jumps out from your screen. The music is filled with manic energy that perfectly compliments the actions on screen and puts you in a feel-good mood, and the sound effects are equally wacky, helping to deliver extra punch with the gags.

The entire package is great fun to behold. Most impressive of all is the pace of the series - for a three minute show you get a surprising number of gags thrown at you and there is not a wasted second. It passes by in a flash, one thing leading directly into the next, and when the narrator screams "What will happen next episode??" at the end you are left wanting to see the next one immediately.

Poyopoyo is a great show - it had me smiling for the entire time it was on and laughing louder than I would like to admit. For a comedy series, I would say that is a massive success. Even if you don’t like cats, the comedy present between Poyo and his adoptive family will have you cracking a smile at the very least.

You can currently watch Poyopoyo in streaming form via Crunchyroll.
