Film and Anime Music Composer Yutaka Yamada Launches Debut Solo Project “THE ONE (CHAPTER I)”

A powerful new musical journey from the talent behind the music of Vinland Saga and Tokyo Ghoul

Written by Ross Locksley on 17 Nov 2025

Known for his scores for many anime and film projects, including Yu Yu Hakusho and Alice in Borderland for Netflix, Vinland Saga (wonderful piano!) and Tokyo Ghoul, compose Yutaka Yamada is set to release the first chapter of his solo project THE ONE (CHAPTER 1) on November 21st.

This is a new approach for the artist, who usually has to put music to other works, but this all comes from within. THE ONE will be available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music and Youtube Music - we'll update with some direct links once it goes live!

From the Press Release:

Conceived as a ten-chapter body of work, THE ONE marks Yamada’s first project released under his own name as a solo artist rather than solely as a screen composer. Each chapter explores a different aspect of his musical identity, shaped by years of experience in orchestral scoring, hybrid production, and melodic writing for picture.

“THE ONE (CHAPTER I)” introduces the world of the project with two tracks.

  • “THE ONE : Ὀρίζων”. A cinematic instrumental opening that sets the emotional horizon for the chapters ahead.
  • “Ἀνατολή”. A vocal track featuring Bobby John, centered on the feeling of running toward the unknown with hope.

The music moves between expansive orchestral writing and intimate, emotionally direct vocal work. It preserves the sense of scale and texture that defines Yamada’s screen compositions, while shifting that world-building energy into a context that exists independently of any specific story or character.

Across THE ONE, Yamada collaborates with musicians from around the world, including Grammy-winning jazz pianist Geoffrey Keezer, drummer Cliff Almond, and cellist Arisa Inamoto. The orchestral recordings feature an 86-piece ensemble from Capellen Orchestra, captured at Congress Center Zlín in the Czech Republic, bringing depth, clarity, and cinematic power to the project.

Yamada explains,

“Most of the time, my job is to write music that supports what is happening on screen, and I genuinely love doing that. But with THE ONE, I wanted to ask myself a different kind of question: what would my music sound like if I followed my own inner story instead? I love working in film and series, but I felt like I needed a project like this to keep growing as a composer.”

He continues,

“I still approach music with a world-building mindset, but in this project the world is emotional rather than visual. I hope that what I discover through THE ONE resonates with listeners and leads to new stories, new collaborations, and future scores with directors and creative partners I have not yet met.”

Over the past decade, Yamada has become one of the most in-demand composers working between Japan and the global market. His scores for Alice in Borderland, Yu Yu Hakusho, Tokyo Ghoul, Vinland Saga, and Sanrio’s My Melody and Kuromi projects have earned a large international audience, reaching hundreds of millions of streams and more than 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
