Anime Expo 2015 anime licensing round-up

Written by A. H. on 05 Jul 2015

Having covered off manga and visual novels, let's get to the meet of Anime Expo 2015's slew of announcements - anime itself! Again, there were some notable surprises to be found reverberating around the show, so let's see who had what to show off for the North American market, shall we?

Viz Media

Perhaps one of the more inevitable pieces of news to hit the show is that the much-loved Death Note will finally be coming to Blu-ray from Viz Media - we don't know when as yet, but look out for Madhouse's anime adaptation in HD at some point in the future.

Meanwhile, Viz Media also confirmed that they have already acquired the rights to the anime adaptation of One Punch Man, which is widely expected to air this autumn. THe series will be streamed on Viz Media's own web site, and also DAISUKI. Any chance of UK availability, fellas?

Also acquired by the company, inevitable, is Naruto follow-on Boruto the Movie - there are no further details on this one at present, however.

Aniplex USA

Aniplex of America were on-hand at the show to confirm that Your Lie in April will be receiving an English dub, and that Tsukimonogatari will enjoy its Blu-ray release on September 15th in North America, meaning we can probably expect a UK release of that latter title from MVM Entertainment later in 2015.

In other release news, the first half of Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works will be released on August 25th, complete with an English dub, while Durarara x2's first series will be released across two volumes on September 29th and November 24th. The UK rights for these titles are held by MVM Entertainment and Anime Limited respectively, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for more news of their releases on our shores in due course.

Sentai Filmworks

As always, Sentai Filmworks had plenty to show off, with the biggest surprise of the bunch being their acquisition of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes anime series, following on from Viz Media's acquisition of the novels. There are no further details on the company's release plans for this title as of yet.

Rescued from licensing limbo meanwhile is Higurashi: When They Cry - the series was previously acquired by FUNimation Entertainment, who let their license expire, but Sentai will be giving it a new lease of life while also confirming that they have picked up the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei OVA.

The company also had a number of summer 2015 season licenses to show off, in the form of GATEUshio & Tora, School-Live!, Wakaba Girl, To Love-Ru -Trouble- Darkness 2nd and Aoharu x Machinegun. With the exception of Aoharu x Machinegun, which has been acquired by Anime Limited, and To-Love-Ru Darkness, we believe that Sentai also holds the UK home video rights to all of these summer season titles.

FUNimation Entertainment

The biggest announcement from FUNimation Entertainment's panel was also a surprising one, as they confirmed a place on the production committee for Dimension W, a forthcoming anime adaptation of a manga series co-created by the Darker Than Black character designer and King of Thorn author.

That aside, the lack of any Dragon Ball Super news was conspicuous by its absence, but the company did confirm that they will be streaming both Venus Project: Climax and Chaos Dragon as part of their summer 2015 line-up.

Nozomi Entertainment

Last but certainly not least we come to Nozomi Entertainment, who had a number of acquisitions of their own to show off.

Most notable here is the company's entry into the Blu-ray market, as the distributor confirmed they'll be bringing the classic Revolutionary Girl Utena to the format in 2016. The original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series will also enjoy a Blu-ray release as well as a DVD offering for North America come the autumn. Other Gundam series in the pipeline for a US release are Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, After War Gundam X, and the Turn A Gundam movies.

Also announced by the company is a release of healing aniem Tamayura's OVA and TV series and Umi Monogatari as subtitle-only releases this autumn. Moving forward to 2016, the distributor has licensed the second season of baseball series The Big Windup, the anime adaptation of manga series Pita Ten and GONZO's adaptation of A Town Where You Live, all of which will arrive as subtitle-only releases next year.

So, plenty to get your teeth into here, but what are you looking forward to? Why not let us know!
