Default Do you Read or Try before you buy?

Try before you buy, an excuse i hear (and use) a lot for viewing the occasional episode of an anime i know will soon be avaliable for myself to buy either on TV or by other sources. I discovered urges for most of the anime on my shelf this way, and albeit not legal, its easily one of the better ways to make sure you arent wasting your money.

But...

I am interested in how many people actually do this, or read reviews like the ones on UKA to judge whether they will like a series before they buy it? I would expect most people don't just grab anime off the shelf at their local HMV without knowing what the series is about.

So, i ask you lot this, do you read reviews, leech an odd episode, or just read the back of the dvd case to find out if it is good? (Put your preferred method, as this forum S/W does not allow for more than one choice...)

well for me, i read newtype, and anything that catches my eye, i look at on the internet(official site) and then look at the animeondvd review. once thats done, if i like what i read, i try to watch a trailer just to seal the deal.

for older series, i just look at AoD and look at the pretty case and/or box.

the first anime shows i watched were recommended by friends but two out of three i watch now are chosen through reading reviews online. i've bought the occasional DVD after seeing the trailer (eg excel saga) and luckily i enjoyed them.

Well what about a bit of all of the above.
If a article highly recomends it then i try and find it and have a quick flick.
Same if a friend has it, or recomends it.
As for any i havent hurd off, a quich read of the back and then a quick glance.
I say alwayes test befor you buy, if that is posible.

I'm not voting cos I've not bought anime for ages. I get review copies. If I buy something it's usually cheap second hand stuff that's popular; simply so I know what people are watching in case I need to write about it.

I used to go by what people were recommending in Animerica, though.

I usually download a few episodes of a series to see if i like it. then buy it. If its a movie, i just read as many reviews as i can to get a good wide opinion of it.. i dont like wasting money on crap.

I honestly do a mix of everything, and can't really pick a single prime one. Some series I've watched a couple of eps, some I've read reviews, some have been recommended and others I've just read the box.

tbh, I have also bought quite a few things blind - in fact 99% of my manga purchases I've known little to nothing about them before I got them.

i mainly read reviews and look around the net to get a general idea of what other people think of it then if its a manga i buy the first volume if its good i keep collecting if its an anime i download the first ep if its good i buy buy buy

then i tell other people to watch it and if its really good i add it to my tools for convertion kit

I do a bit of a mixture. I usually download a few episodes or read a couple of reviews to get me started. Some forum discussions are also pretty good because you get a real mix of opinions, so I tend to follow a few series threads to get a wider feel for something before I commit to buying.
I’ve also bough stuff cold though. I bought NGE just by chance waaaaay back in the day when it was first released on VHS and I knew nothing about it, I just happened to see the first volume in a run down rental shop, read the back and bought it. In fact a lot of my older stuff used to be bought cold, especially before I had the internet. Now though I sample, read, sample, read some more and then buy.

do you people mean download when they're undubbed, thus only available through FS, or download when they're already available in the shops?

I don't download episodes, aside from the legal and moral issues, it isn't allowed on the university network anyway and I just can't be bothered at home. Usually what happens is that a review or trailer catches my eye, then I'll read around a little more before renting or buying the first volume.

I tend to download a few episodes, and if I like it I buy it. Seems to be standard issue around these parts. If it's a film I'll probably take the plunge if it sounds cool and folks have been praising it.

All of the above if possible. Can't download at the moment (disturbily slow net conection), so have to rely on things l've seen on US/OZ tv, reading the manga in borders or reveiws/recomendations.
If we get faster connection may try before buying
